BANSKA BYSTRICA, Slovakia (AP) — Slovakia’s President said Thurday that the heads of the country’s political parties would meet in an effort to bring calm after the shooting of Prime Minister Robert Fico.

Outgoing President Zuzana Caputova, a political rival of Fico, said yesterday that the attempted assassination was an “attack on democracy.” Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok said Wednesday that an initial investigation found “a clear political motivation” for the attack.

Fico was in serious but stable condition Thursday morning.
